We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Bloomberg Philanthropies has awarded San Francisco a 3-year grant focused on “digital innovation.”

As part of its Innovation in Government portfolio, Bloomberg Philanthropies (the charitable foundation started by former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg) has already funded more that 40 “i-teams” in mayor’s offices around the world. This year, San Francisco joins a cohort alongside Amsterdam, Netherlands; Bogotá, Colombia; Mexico City, Mexico; Reykjavík, Iceland; and Washington, DC.

In conjunction with the grant, we’re also excited to announce that the Office of Civic Innovation will be rebranding — you can call us the Mayor’s Office of Innovation from here on out.

So, what’s changing?

First, we will be shifting from the Department of Technology into the Mayor’s Office.

Second, we will be adding six new teams members over the next two years to expand our digital capacity.

Third, in addition to the Civic Bridge program, we’ll begin tackling cross-departmental, digital challenges to build on the data driven practices we began developing during COVID.

In the words of Mayor Breed — “During COVID, San Francisco experienced tremendous success by following the data and science to help protect public health. Our data-driven approach helped us deliver better services and build trust at a very challenging time for our City. Thanks to the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies, we can build off the lessons learned from COVID and improve how San Francisco serves all of its residents, and create a more efficient, accessible, and equitable government as we emerge from this pandemic.”

We are honored and thrilled to be working with the team at Bloomberg Philanthropies!
